Since its founding on July 16th, 1935, the Mexican Association of Gastroenterology (AMG) has maintained as its essential mission the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of gastroenterology. This vocation was early reflected in the creation of the Revista de Gastroenterología de México, first published on September 15th of that same year, which has since become the leading national scientific journal of the specialty and a reference point throughout Latin America.
Over the past nine decades, the AMG has explored additional editorial initiatives that mirror the dynamism and evolution of our discipline. In 1949, under the leadership of Dr. Norberto Treviño Zapata, Hígado y Bazo was published, a journal oriented toward clinical and surgical aspects. Although short-lived, it left its mark as a precursor to future endeavors.
In 2007, during the presidency of Dr. Juan Miguel Abdo Francis, the project Clínicas de Gastroenterología de México was launched. This publication was conceived with a distinct focus: practical, up-to-date reviews designed for ease of reading and with direct clinical applicability—intended both for the gastroenterologist in training and for the practicing specialist. In its initial stage, two volumes were published, encompassing medical, endoscopic, and surgical topics.
After a period of inactivity, the project was resumed in 2023 under the leadership of Dr. Jesús Kazuo Yamamoto Furusho, with the release of 11 issues. In 2024, under the direction of Dr. Octavio Gómez Escudero, an additional 4 issues were published, further strengthening the visibility and utility of this series.
Today, under the stewardship of the 2025 Board of Directors and in continuity with the 2026 Board, we have taken a decisive step toward the consolidation and formal establishment of Clínicas de Gastroenterología de México as a stable, professional publication with international projection. Beginning with this volume, it becomes an official journal of the AMG, featuring a defined editorial process, a standing editorial board, associate editors, peer review, and a dynamic platform.
Our goal is clear: that this publication, like its older sibling Revista de Gastroenterología de México, will be recognized for its quality, continuity, and relevance. In the coming future, we aspire to inclusion in national and international repositories and, ultimately, to achieving an impact factor that reflects the academic value of its contents.
We are particularly pleased that the inaugural volume of this new stage is dedicated to irritable bowel syndrome—one of the most relevant and prevalent conditions in our clinical practice. This issue presents 10 comprehensive topics spanning pathophysiology, classification, and diagnosis to dietary aspects, pharmacologic concepts, complementary therapies, and individualized subtype-based approaches. Renowned national experts contribute to this volume, offering clear and updated syntheses of the available evidence, and providing a valuable tool for both general clinicians and gastroenterology specialists.
With enthusiasm, commitment, and gratitude to all who have contributed to this collective effort, we celebrate a new editorial beginning. Clínicas de Gastroenterología de México is not merely a journal; it represents the continuity of a legacy, the opening to new generations, and the conviction that shared knowledge strengthens our entire community.
