Gastroesophageal reflux disease is one of the most prevalent conditions in the practice of gastroenterology. It presents with a spectrum of clinical outcomes, ranging from erosive esophagitis and Barrett’s esophagus to functional disorders such as functional heartburn and reflux hypersensitivity, with indistinct clinical presentations. It is essential to adequately understand the different clinical scenarios of this condition and how to make the appropriate diagnosis to offer the best options of treatment to our patients. This review will address the definitions and clinical relevance of each of these conditions.
